Santa's Keyhole Falls Pictures 2005

The drive from Pemberton to Keyhole Falls was about 80 kilometers,
or 50 miles, 50 kilometers of which was by mostly good quality dirt
road ranging from river-bottom-rock surface to plain dirt to overlaid
gravel surface. Some of the roadway is subject to rock falls so you
should always drive with an eye to possible large rocks on the surface
which could puncture a gas tank or oil pan on your vehicle. However,
the trip along the Lillooet River is spectacular and well worth the side
trip. And especially if you are into camping there is a very nice camp
ground at about the 35 kilometer mark of the dirt road, allowing more
exploration of the area at leisure as well as quality hiking. Fishing is
possible but unlikely as the Lillooet River is extremely muddy.

This is the Nairn Falls Campground Map. This campground is just
a couple of kilometers outside Pemberton on Highway 99. This map shows the entire lower mainland-Fraser Valley as far north as Williams Lake and in detail the area Mrs. Claus and Santa visited on this trip, except the region covered in the upper left corner of Pemberton by the rock climbing picture insert. This includes the upper Lillooet River, the backroad over the Hurley to Gold Bridge and Bralorne, the Upper Lillooet Campground and the Meager Creek and Keyhole Falls Hot Springs. This is an area of especial scenic beauty with at least a half-dozen waterfalls of singular beauty, and it is about a 35 kilometer drive to the campground and 50 kilometers total one way to Keyhole Falls. Nairn Falls itself is the home of the only boa constrictor living in Canada - an 18-inch long snake more resembling of a large earthworm.

Fantastic scenery, mountains, ice packs and waterfalls, abound as you drive along the upper Lillooet River toward the hot springs and campground. An interesting side trip here would be to take the Hurley over to Bralorne and Goldbridge to visit some of the rich mining history of British Columbia as well as excellent fishing.

A fun surprise was this mountain stream ford.

Just a little closer, only about three inches deep.

Mrs. Claus taking pictures for the record in case we make it?

Keyhole Falls, looking up-river.

Mrs. Claus and Santa on the bridge....

You can see the water dropping down into the "keyhole" here. It would be magnificent to view this from the other side, but likely also very impossible.
